Bhutan is a small landlocked independent kingdom sandwiched between two giants and populous China in the north and India in the south. The kingdom is renowned around the globe by its development philosophy of “Gross National Happiness”.

Bhutan is considered safe destination for all visitors irrespective of gender, culture or ethnicity. The crime rate is almost zero however, needs to be cautious and prepared against natural hazards, wild animals and other health related issues.

Travel documents for Bhutan depend on your nationality: Indian citizens can use a valid passport or a Voter Identity Card (VIC) to get an entry permit upon arrival. Other foreign nationals must have a valid passport with at least six months of validity, and a visa clearance letter issued by the Royal Government of Bhutan.

Ngultrum (Nu.) is the currency of Bhutan and its value is at par with the Indian Rupee. This currency is widely used all over Bhutan.

While it is now possible to travel independently, you must still use an accredited Bhutanese travel agent to handle your visa, tour, and other aspects of your trip, which will require the agent to have specific licenses and certifications

Travel outside of Paro and Thimphu: If you plan to visit areas outside of the Paro and Thimphu valleys, a guide is required. 

Driving your own car: If you enter Bhutan by land with your own vehicle, a guide is required at all times.                               

Land entry: A guide is mandatory for all visitors who enter and exit by land

While it is mandatory for the Bhutanese travel guide  to wear a national dress when accompanying the tourist, however, the tourist may wear any decent and appropriate dress of your choice.
